She is one of the most popular daughters-in-law on the small screen and Deepika Singh — aka Sandhya bindhani of Diya Aur Baati Hum fame — says that there is nothing more satisfying than facing the camera each day. She admits that this profession also has its own set of disadvantages but she takes each day as it comes and overcomes any obstacle that she faces –– much like her character on screen.

Dressed in a yellow sari, looking very much like the character, the actress had come to the City to present an award at a recent IPL match. But quiz her about her fascination towards the game, and she says, “Since most of my time is spent on the sets, I rarely get to watch cricket but as a child I used to watch cricket with my family.”

Her attachment is more towards her serial. Deepika describes her journey in the show as a very special one. “My reel and real life are very similar. Like my character, I too have struggled a lot to get to where I am today,” says Deepika. Interestingly, Deepika never thought of getting into television. Hailing from a family of businessmen, Deepika always thought she would end up in the family business. “Though I was very active in theatre, I never thought of becoming a television actress. When I got the offer, I thought of trying it out for a brief time but now I can’t think of leaving the show,” she says. She is very grateful for the recognition and the fame she got through the serial. “People come up to me and call me by my character’s name. It’s a very special thing for me because they believe in me and my character,” she adds.

Deepika admits that she has changed as a theatre and a television artiste over the years. “I have definitely matured and now, I am more aware of the camera. I have also learnt so much from my co-stars,” she adds.

Ask her if she plans to move to the big screen soon, and she says that she has not thought about it yet. “I am very happy with my life right now. I went with the flow when Diya... was offered to me. Though I’m not looking out for roles in movies, I am open to anything interesting,” she sums up.
