Encouraged by the good results of SSLC and PU students of its institutions, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has now decided to set up degree colleges in City. After two successful good results in SSLC and PU, BBMP has revived its old project — degree colleges for poor and down trodden.

The three new colleges will come up at Byraveshwara Nagar on Nagarbhavi road, 1st cross Magadi Road near Leprosy Hospital and Cleave Land Town near Frazer Town. While Byraveshwara Nagar and Magadi Road colleges will be co-education colleges, an exclusive girls college will come up at the Cleave Land Town. “The Bangalore University too has accredited these three colleges,” said palike sources.

This year these colleges will offer only BA and BCom courses, but from next academic year onwards they will also have BSc. The number of degree colleges run by BBMP has now gone up to four.

A senior palike official said many poor girls from Frazer town and neighbouring areas who travel long distance to study in Maharani College, can avail quality education at a very cheaper price in Cleave Land Town College. This year 59 per cent students of BBMP schools passed SSLC examination, which is an increase of about five pc as compared to previous year. Similarly, 74 per cent second year PU students cleared the examination, a 15 pc increase compared to last year.
