When an A-lister or a Bollywood actress wants to attract attention on a red carpet she does one thing: she opts for a jumpsuit. And this has been proven on several occasions when actresses like Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra have raised the glam quotient by turning up in jumpsuits!

Be it short or long ones, these one piece garments which can be worn with ease, do make a bold statement. Although, jumpsuits originally referred to the one-piece garments used by parachuters, cleaners, janitors, car-racers and skydivers, now they are a popular wear for fashion conscious girls too. They can be sported irrespective of occasion – for an evening out, as day time party wear, beach wear or even while lazing around.

Ekta Jaipuria of Ekru brand says that jumpsuits have become fashionable off late. “Since it flatters all body types, whether big or petite, it is adored by almost every woman. Jumpsuits are fuss-free fashion wear. You do not have to match two pieces i.e. the top and bottom to create an ensemble. One single piece dresses you up. Just wear a thick belt and you are ready to go. Jumpsuits make a powerful fashion statement since they are a bold choice and spell confidence.”

They work best thin, flowy fabrics. For the summer, they are best suited in chiffon and wrinkle-free cottons. For an evening out, stretch lycra is also good. As jumpsuits lend a slimming silhouette to the wearer, it primarily suits tall and slender women. However, any one can wear it but stay away if you have a heavy bottom as it tends to accentuate that. The length is more for the look and not so much for the body type. While it is true that tall women can wear both short and full length jumpsuits, short lengths are not suited for short and heavy women. Short jumpsuits are more for casual wear while full length ones are formal wear.

According to Pam Mehta, “One can wear a jumpsuit in satin lycra and cottons for a casual look and for the formal look, one can go for silk satin and even georgette for some exciting draped variations.”

So, what body types are best suitable? Mini Bindra, a designer says, “Top heavy girls should go for a V-neck or a button front layered over vest, hourglass and pear shapes should go for belted or waisted with strong shoulder details to balance out the hips and bottom heavy to go for lower hipline and avoid accentuating with belts.”
