Big field for athletics day competition

Over 1000 athletes in various categories will compete in the 18th IAAF World Athletics Day meet organised by Bangalore Schools Sports Foundation (BSSF) Track & Field Academy on Saturday at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

The event, an annual affair globally, is organised in the month of May under directions from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) since 1996.
The meet will be staged under floodlights this time, BSSF vice-president and former international Reeth Abraham said.

“It is a really special day as as we can put the focus on track and field events. We thought this year we can make it even more special by organising this meet under floodlights, giving exposure to young athletes,’’ she said.

The senior athletes (men & women) will compete in the 100M, 800M and long jump while athletes from the various run clubs and corporate houses will take part in the 3000M (women), 5000M (men) and 4x400M relay.

Children in the 9-17 years age category will compete in 12 events including 50M, 60M, 80M, 100M, 200M, 400M, 600M, 1000M, 1500M, long jump, high jump and shot put.

Spot entries can also be done on the day of the meet which will begin at 3.30 pm and conclude by 8.30 pm with the inauguration scheduled at 5 pm by Sports Minister Abhaychandra Jain.
