JOIN USThe annual mango and jackfruit mela, organised by the Department of Horticulture, at Lalbagh, began on Friday.
As many as 86 stalls displayed different varieties of mangoes and jackfruits on the occasion. From Alphonso, Malgova, Sakkare Gutli, Thothapuri, Raspuri, Mallika, Dussehri, Kalapad, Neelam, Sindura, Benisha, Raspuri, Banganapalli, Kesar, Amrapali, to Rathna, there was a variety of mangoes on show.
A range of jackfruits such as Chandrahalasu, Veerakesari, Swarana halasu, Sarvaruthu among others, caught the attention of the public. The sale of fruits will continue till June 15, while the exhibition closes on May 31.
The objective of the mela is to enable direct sale of mango and jackfruit from growers to consumers, avoiding middlemen.
Minister for Horticulture Shamanuru Shivashankarappa, who inaugurated the mela on Friday, said mango is grown on 1.72 lakh hectares in the State with annual production of about 2.50 lakh tonnes.
“Kolar district is the largest mango grower and the fruit is grown on 40,769 hectares,” the minister said.
