In what seemed like a script taken straight out of Bollywood, an alleged rapist took the help of his family to plant a body to fake his own death to escape punishment and nearly succeeded in his endeavour but for a forensic test.

Police are now searching for Mahesh Kumar who was said to be in regular touch with his family after faking his death with their help.

A resident of  the Partapur area in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut district, Mahesh Kumar allegedly kidnapped a minor around two years back, held her as a hostage for five months and allegedly raped her.

The victim, daughter of a home guard, recovered from her injuries and gave a statement to the police accusing Mahesh Kumar of kidnap, based on which police registered a complaint and launched a manhunt.

Months later, police recovered a headless body near a railway crossing in the district, identified later as Mahesh by his family.

Mahesh’s driving licence and a diary were also recovered from the scene. Police handed over the body to the family and closed the case.

However, Mahesh remained in close touch with his family and to top it up, his family lodged a complaint alleging that the victim’s father murdered Mahesh to avenge the rape.

The victim’s family later came to know that Mahesh was alive and in touch with his family. Learning this, Mahesh threatened them of dire consequences if they pursue their complaint against him.

However, the victim’s family requested the police to conduct a DNA analysis of the body to ascertain if the dead man was indeed Mahesh.

Tests on the blood samples of the body, which the police had preserved, revealed the dead man was not Mahesh.

Senior police officials said that a case would be registered against Mahesh's family.
A manhunt has now again been launched to capture Mahesh.
