Last Updated 02 June 2013, 20:59 IST

Three days after a 14-year-old boy, Lokesh, drowned in Shamareddy Bande quarry near Kudlu Gate, off Parappana Agrahara, local residents found the boy’s body on Sunday morning.

At 6.30 am, the local residents set out to search for the body. “Lokesh's mother Sharada had not eaten anything since the day of the incident,” the victim’s uncle, Venkatesh said.

Moved by her plight, the villagers, acting on their initiative and without waiting for fire officials, decided to search for the body on their own accord, he said.
Reaching the quarry, the search party immediately spotted Lokesh's body floating in the water and informed police, who moved the body to Victoria Hospital.

‘Close quarry’

Meanwhile, residents have asked the local administration to close or cordon off the quarry, which, according to them, has remained unused for over 10 years.

“In that time, there have been over 26 deaths, mostly people falling into the quarry. It’s high time that the authorities take immediate measures to close the place,” said Sakappa, president of the Parent-Teachers’ Association at the local government school.
Shiva Kumar, station officer of the Jayanagar fire division, told Deccan Herald that his men had called off the search on Saturday after nightfall.

“We were going to resume the search on Monday morning, when we got the call that the body had been found,” he said.
