A 30-year-old mentally challenged man was detained with his licensed pistol and cartridges, a few metres away from the home of Ahmad Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, on Sunday night, police said.

“Joginder Singh was sitting inside his car when he was stopped at a police check post at Mother Teresa Crescent in central Delhi. He was mentally unstable, unable to answer questions and speaking nonsense. When the vehicle was checked, a .315 bore pistol and 21 cartridges were recovered from him,” said a police officer.

When asked, he failed to tell the reason of carrying the pistol and also did not disclose where he wanted to go, the officer added. Police said he was also examined by doctors, and his family members have been informed.

“We are still trying to ascertain the exact reason of his carrying the pistol,” said the officer.

The house of the senior Congress leader is around 200 metre away from the place from where he was detained, the officer added.
