Altera unveils new low-cost Cyclone chips

Annoucing the release, Altera India Country Sales Manager Gangatharan Gopal said the Cyclone family of chips have been targeted at low-cost segment. With lower power of up to 25 per cent, they are important for applications like hand held devices and portable medical solutions, he added.

Cyclone IV comes in two variants — Cyclone IV GX which has built-in transceivers while Cyclone IV E will have more logic and memory capabilities. With up to 150K logic elements (LEs), 6.5-Mbits RAM, 360 multipliers and eight integrated 3.125-Gbps transceivers supporting mainstream protocols, Cyclone IV GX is said to be only FPGA product with built-in transceivers for the low-cost market. The company said Cyclone IV GX and Cyclone IV E will be shipped in Q1 of 2010.
