'Budding teachers submit fake certificates at Ramjas'

Anonymous letter sent to principal levels allegation

Around 12-14 general category candidates who appeared for job interviews held on Tuesday for the posts of ad hoc teachers in the department of commerce reportedly submitted fake Scheduled Castes (SC) category certificates, if an anonymous letter addressed to the college is to be believed.

“The letter was addressed to the college principal. There were around 140 candidates who came for the interviews on Tuesday. The letter has also mentioned a list of names of the candidates who allegedly used fake SC certificates,” said Dhaniram, member of the central enabling committee for SC/ST category.

The principal could not be contacted; however, an official from the college said the letter has been sent to the teacher in charge of the commerce department for verification.
“In case the allegations are found to be true, an inquiry committee will be set up and the college will file a police complaint,” added Dhaniram.

DU has around 4,000 vacant teaching posts. Teachers claim that the majority of posts (including backlog) under the SC/ST category are lying vacant.

“For permanent teaching positions, the documents are verified twice. However, not much attention is given to the genuineness of documents during ad hoc appointments. If this allegation is true, a verification mechanism of documents have to be put in place,” said the official.

In 2011, the college was under the scanner after 30 students reportedly used fake marksheets to secure admissions in undergraduate courses.

Initially, the principal was alleged to have been involved, however he came out clean after the police inquiry. To avoid a repeat of the fake marksheet scam, the college had hired forensics expert last year to verify marksheets at the time of admissions and continued during this admission season.

“The ad hoc teacher situation is grim in higher education with universities not recruiting those hundreds of PhD holders looking for jobs in academics. This move should be seen as a desperate attempt to secure a job, that too on ad hoc basis. I am not justifying the act, however this should be seen as an alarm bell,” said a teacher of the college.
