SUFC pulls out of second division

Lack of support from AIFF cited

In a sudden turn of events, South United Football Club, who had promised to showcase Bangalore football talent on the national scene, have decided not to compete in I-League’s Second Division.

Blaming the All India Football Federation for their lack of support to clubs, CEO of Lokko Sports, the owners of SUFC, Lokknath R Char said he arrived at the sudden decision because he felt the I-League hardly provided a stepping stone to emerging players which is vital for the development of the game.

“I’m not interested in the second division I-League,” revealed Char at a press conference here on Friday. “I don’t see what value we’re going to get out of it. You play eight games in 30 days, the players are burnt out but there is no contribution to you from AIFF. This time, even the travel subsidies from the AIFF have been scrapped.”

“I’d rather put my funds into junior football. I believe in setting up soccer schools across the country and that’s going to be our priority now. It’s more worthwhile to invest in kids and play in the local (BDFA) Super Division,” added Char whose club took part in the I-League Second Division this year held in Bangalore but failed to make the cut to the top tier.

Char’s decision and non-committment on their return to I-League could spark an exodus of talented players like Stephen and Amoes. “They won’t be happy with Super Division alone. They have already received good offers, and if they want to leave, I’m not going to prevent them,” he added while admitting it was a mistake on his part to jump on to the I-League bandwagon way too early.

SUFC coach Raman Vijayan, who was roped in amidst much hoopla, voiced disappointment but sympathised with Char’s decision.
