Poorvisha eases through; Devika in second round

Poorvisha swept aside Insha Imam of Jharkhand 21-15, 21-12 inside half-an-hour while Devika outclassed Nimmi Patel of Gujarat 21-7, 21-19 in just 20 minutes in the girls singles.

Poorvisha took a cautious approach and relied more on drop shots in the first game, deft touches dotting her play.
As the match wore on, Poorvisha slowly gained momentum and started playing half smashes. The ploy worked for her and from a precarious position at 14-11 the 14-year-old jumped to 20-15, before closing out the game.

Poorvisha took a firm grip in the second game as well at 14-8 before sealing the match with a drop shot that beat Imam all ends up. Poorvisha will meet Akanksha Raina of Jammu and Kashmir in the second round on Friday. Earlier, Mandya girl Devika, who clinched the first game in the bat of an eye lid, showed signs of nerves in the second as Nimmi squared the game at 16-all. Devika, egged on by the crowd, soon tilted the balance in her favour to wind up the proceedings. Later, Sonic Prabhudesai made it to the next round with a clinical 21-10, 21-17 win over Aditya Joshi of Madhya Pradesh. Rajas Jawalkar scored a hard-fought win over V Anvesh of AP 21-12, 20-22, 21-13 while another State shuttler Kamaldeep Singh fell by the wayside. All the top 16 seeds, who received byes in the first round, will kick off their campaign from Friday. Top seed B Sumeeth Reddy of Andhra Pradesh takes on Karnataka lad D Sunil Verma while PC Tulasi, the top-ranked player in the girls’section, faces Arjoo Thakur of Himachal Pradesh.
