Buns to boost cops' attendance for parade

Last Updated 23 August 2013, 22:43 IST

Can bun prevent the City Armed Reserve (CAR) police officials from skipping the fortnightly parade session at the CAR headquarters? The senior officials believe it can, but some participants are skeptical.

The buns, to be distributed to participants after the session, will be prepared by inmates of Parappana Agrahara Central prison.

“The project is mooted with the absolute co-operation of the inmates and the prison officials, who have agreed to supply the food at a nominal price,” said R Ramesh,  Deputy Commissioner of Police, CAR Headquarters.

While the market price for a single bun would be Rs seven, the Parappana Agrahara food products, branded ‘Parivarthana,’ would be procured by the CAR for Rs 3.33 each and distributed freely to its personnel. According to an estimate, the department may have to bear expense of Rs 12, 000 every month to provide buns to close to 1,000 CAR staff attending the parade.

Senior police officers expect that the programme would not only inspire the police personnel to attend the session but will also cushion their expenditure on food while attending the session.

“Depending on the working of the project, we will decide if we could further expand the project across the department,” said Raghavendra Auradkar, the City Commissioner of Police.

However, the initiative has not caught up quite popularly among some CAR parade attendees. More than the food, it is some other inconveniences that hold them back.
“Soon after finishing the night shift, we need to attend the early morning parade.

For this, I have to travel approximately 10 km. Though the parade lasts only about an hour, we need to be present there close to five hours before vacating the ground. Do you think I would do all this just to eat a couple of buns?” a CAR official said, on condition of anonymity.

Senior police officers, however, promised that more such welfare measures will be introduced are the finances of the department are improved.
