Head constable held for rape

A Delhi Police head constable was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping a 40-year-old widow at south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj. His friend has also been arrested for criminal conspiracy in the case.

Sources said head constable Anil was posted at Tughlaq Road police station. The woman alleged that she was sexually assaulted by 53-year-old Anil at a hotel in Mahipalpur late on Monday. Police said Anil and his friend Devender knew the victim since 2011.

In her complaint, the woman told police that she was taken a hotel by both the accused, but Devender left after some time. She alleged that Anil then sexually assaulted her.

The victim reported the matter to police after which her medical examination was conducted. “It could not confirm sexual assault, but a case of rape was filed on the basis of her complaint,” a police officer said.

The officer further said according to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2013, even touching private parts of a person is considered as rape.

Anil was arrested on Tuesday on grounds of sexually assaulting the woman. Initially, the investigating officer said there were rumours of Anil being a Delhi Police head constable. “We are trying to verify these rumours,” the officer said. Sources, however, confirmed that he was part of Delhi Police.

A case under sections 376 (rape) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered with Vasant Kunj North police station. Police, however, said the woman has a criminal background. “We are trying to verify this. Her son is in jail for committing several criminal offences,” the officer added.

Anil’s family members alleged that he was being implicated over personal enmity.
