Making choices

Last Updated 20 May 2009, 12:46 IST

After SSLC: What Next? is a handy compendium of careers and courses available after SSLC. The author, a career consultant, has brought together a rich fund of information on how to choose a career, how to assess one’s aptitude and how to access the various opportunities.

Professions that  score high salary-wise, figure on the top of the list of careers. In terms of academics, careers get categorised according to the marks needed for admissions. Those scoring 70 per cent and above head for the science stream while those with first class can consider PUC commerce. Arts is open to all students who have passed.

Plenty of choice

According to the author, at least 15,000 careers are available for one to choose from. But most students fail to be guided by their aptitude and go by advice from parents, or the simple remunerative worth of a professional. If not these, then they succumb to peer pressure and follow their friends.

The author has demolished several such traps youth fall into and land up becoming professional transvestites. The author suggests a ten-minute personality test-based on the 90 questions which may help a student to crystallise his or her choices. The exercise frames questions in order to etch to broad relief the latent aspirations of the youth and enable him to determine the type of personality he possesses and know the broader contours of his own tastes and talents.

The first section of the book discusses the steps in career planning, a personality assessment test to help students understand their personality, tips on career selection based on multiple intelligence theory, career myths, realities and the role of parents in career guidance.

Courses after 10th

The second section provides the courses available in PUC, polytechnics and ITIs, and the vocational courses available in institutions such as GTTC, IATA, or courses designed for paramedics, hotel management, gemology, footwear technology, plastic technology, fashion and apparel technology.

The third section provides details of competitive exams after 10th standard for joining the Indian armed forces like Combined Matric Preliminary Examination, Indian Navy Dockyard Apprentices Exam, Indian Army Soldier Technical (M.E.R) Exam, Indian Army Soldier Nursing Assistants (M.E.R) Exam, Indian Army Soldier General Duty (N.E.R) Exam, Indian Army Soldier Clerk’s Exam and the Indian Navy Sailors Matric Entry Recruitment Exam.

The final section is devoted to facilities in distance education and endowments and foundations providing scholarships and stipends to students. List of PU colleges and polytechnics in Karnataka help students choose and contact the right institutions. The book is a practical guide for all those who are looking for new careers and opportunities with immense data complete with addresses and phone numbers of institutions.
