Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha on Thursday dropped School Education Minister P Vaigaichelvan, barely six months after inducting him into her cabinet.

Official sources said Vaigaichelvan was also removed from the party post.

“On the recommendation of the Chief Minister, the Governor of Tamil Nadu (K Rosaiah) has dropped Dr Vaigaichelvan, Minister for School Education, Sports and Youth Welfare, Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture from the Council of Ministers,” said a statement from Raj Bhavan.

Vaigaichelvan, representing Aruppukottai constituency in Virudhunagar district, was elevated as the Minister for School Education in February 2013.

Before that, Vaigaichelvan, known for his oratorical skills, was holding the post of Chief Government Whip.

Higher Education Minister P Palaniappan will hold the additional charge of the School Education portfolio as “further recommended” by AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha, the release added.
This has been Jayalalitha’s 10th reshuffle of the state Cabinet since her party came to power in May 2011.
