Heavy rain lashes Mumbai

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning hit Mumbai on Sunday. The regional weather bureau predicted heavy thundershowers in the Mumbai-Goa belt in the next 72 hours.

The Mumbai skyline shimmered with flashes of lightning followed by rumblings of thunder in the morning.

The day saw bumper-to-bumper traffic on roads with vehicles crawling at a snail’s pace and local suburban rail services running empty with Mumbaikars opting to stay indoors on account of weekend holiday and festive season.

The met department also issued a word of caution to motorists, asking them to refrain from unnecessary travel in the hilly Konkan terrain, as visibility would be extremely poor.

The department also asked public services and community project officials to be on alert.

According to the weather bureau, while heavy rainfall would lash South Konkan-Goa, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhdurg, regions of North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada would also witness similar thundershowers in the next 72 hours.
