Last Updated 19 September 2013, 19:21 IST

The State government, on Thursday, submitted before the High Court that it has withdrawn the notification appointing Counsel Bhavani Singh as Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) in a case against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

During the hearing of the petition, counsel for State government submitted that a notification to withdraw Singh’s appointment was issued on September 18, 2013 and furnished the same before the Court.

The State has also submitted that the withdrawal is in concurrence with the Chief Justice. Justice A S Bopanna adjourned the matter for a period of two weeks.

It may be recalled that DMK leader K Anbazhagan had challenged the  appointment of Bhavani Singh as Special Public Prosecutor in the disproportionate asset case against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

The petitioner had contended that the appointment of SPP was not in concurrence with the Chief Justice.

Special court hearing

Jayalalithaa has been charged with amassing wealth of over Rs 66.65 crore, disproportionate to her known sources of income when she was chief minister from 1991 to 1996. A special court is hearing the matter in the City.

Jayalalithaa has now moved the apex court challenging the removal of Singh as SPP, which was also mentioned in the court during the hearing.
