Home Minister Ravi Naik must be thanking his lucky stars. He has been spared much of the embarrassment: he left the station before the show began and was kept in the dark about the entertainment in store. Naik inaugurated the spanking new police station on Thursday evening and left soon after with SP Bosco George.
Police officials said the programme was the brainwave of IGP K D Singh who accepted the offer of a Delhi-based events organiser named Yogi. “He normally charges Rs 3 lakh for a show like this, using international performers. But he offered to do it for free for the police,” a senior official told this newspaper. He said there were Russian and Belgian dancers in the troupe and they performed gymnastic sequences with ribbons and hoops.

‘Not indecent’
Goa police chief B S Bassi said there was nothing indecent about the show and he did not think it inappropriate for the police to invite a foreign troupe to perform in police premises.

“It was a cultural programme and it was not done surreptitiously. Permission had been sought for the show well in advance from a senior officer,” he told Deccan Herald.
The show was held on a stage set up in the police station premises and entertained a crowd of over 200 invitees, an officer at Anjuna said. “The media is blowing this out of proportion. What’s the big deal, we cops are human too,” he said.
