Major infiltration bid foiled, 12 ultras killed on LoC

The Army on Thursday foiled another major infiltration bid on Line of Control (LoC) in the north Kashmir’s frontier district of Kupwara killing at least 12 militants who were trying to sneak into the valley.

General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Srinagar based 15 Corps, Lieutenant General Gurmeet Singh told reporters that the Army foiled a major infiltration bid along the LoC in the Keran sector eliminating 10-12 among 30 militants who  are believed to be trapped in the cordon.

“Troops at the LoC in the Keran sector spotted a group of 30 heavily armed militants trying to cross over to India from Pakistan and challenged them which was followed by a fierce gun battle. Heavy fire fighting is currently going on. Our forward troops have reported seeing 10 to 12 bodies of the terrorists,” he said.

The GOC said that the infiltrators tried to evade thermal sensors by camouflaging themselves by using grass mats and holding on to bushes but the troops detected them and foiled the bid.

“The group was cordoned off by troops almost 200 to 300 metres from the LoC fencing on the Indian side. It is a rough and rugged hilly terrain amid forests where vegetation is being grown by the locals,” he added.

Sources said the Army pressed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into service from the north Kashmir’s Manasbal Garrison into service to detect the movement of trapped militants, besides taking pictures of the bodies. Without divulging the details of number of causality, Singh said that once the operation ended they would be able to give the number of militants killed. “But, so far, there is no casualty on the part of the army,” he said.

General Singh said, “Desperation among terrorist outfits may be on two counts that is their urgency to push in as many terrorists as possible before the winter set in and the impregnable counter infiltration grid established by the troops deployed along the LoC.”

A statement issued on Thursday evening by Srinagar based defence spokesman said, “A massive and desperate infiltration attempt by the terrorists, comprising the mixed group of terrorists from Jaish-e-Mohammad, Lashkar-e-Toiba, Al Badr and Hizb-ul-Mujahiddin is being eliminated by the alert troops deployed in Keran sector through intense operations launched since the night of September 24. The operations are likely to result in elimination of a number of more terrorists.”
