Getting a clear perspective

Kristu Jayanti College held a series of street plays, drama and a host of programmes during Parivartana on the occasion of ‘World  Mental Health Day’ that was observed in the college recently to make the students aware of the existing mental health conditions.

Hosted by the department of psychology, the event saw prominent speakers take the students through several issues. Talking about the topic, ‘Healthy and Successful Aging’, LN Suman, professor, department of clinical psychology, NIMHANS said, “Ageing is the accumulation of changes in a person over time. Ageing in humans refers to a multidimensional process of physical, psychological, and social change.”

Sharing her perspective on the occasion, Molly Joy, head of department of psychology said, “Our mental health is about how we think and feel, our outlook on life and how we are. It’s an essential part of our health. Mental health problems are a ‘normal’ aspect of ageing. Caring for others can keep relationships strong and make people close.”

The students performed a play that highlighted the significance of taking care of older people to maintain their mental health.

“It’s also about showcasing the successful ageing concepts and highlight the difference. The play focused on how to retain their mental stability and how to make sure we age in a healthy way,” explained a member of the team. The students confess that the sessions were useful and the street plays gave them an insight into the various aspects of mental health and the process of ageing. Aradhana, a first-year arts student, says that she was motivated to read up a little more about the process of ageing. Bok, another student, said, “Healthy ageing is important and we also got an idea of how eating habits determine our health.”
