A two-and-a-half-year-old boy died in a hospital hours after a BMTC bus hit the scooter on which he was sitting even as his father tried to push-start it after it ran out of fuel near Munireddy Palya here on Saturday.

Syed Azam and Sumaiya Banu, residents of DJ Halli, had been to Yeshwantpur to complete the ration card application process. Their only son, Syed Jilan, was also with them.

The family was returning home when the scooter ran out of fuel. The couple got down but Jilan remained seated on the vehicle.

Azam then began push-starting the two-wheeler whereas Banu, who is six months pregnant, walked behind.

A fast-approaching BMTC bus (route No 12 bound for Shivajinagar) then rear-ended the scooter and Azam lost grip over it and he fell down. Jilan, too, fell down.

Azam managed to escape with only minor wounds. His son, however had a major injury when his head banged on the road divider, Azam, who is employed at a hotel in DJ Halli, recounted the accident to the police in a statement.

Jilan was rushed to the M S Ramaiah Hospital where he succumbed to injuries late in the night. R T Nagar traffic police have booked a case and arrested the BMTC bus driver.
