With Mysorean Siddaramaiah at the helm of the government as Chief Minister of the State, prominent citizens have resolved to exert pressure on him to set the ball in motion to upgrade the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) into greater MCC.

At a meeting convened at the Institution of Engineers (IEI), here, on Wednesday, citizens, under the banner of Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore (ACICM), arrived at a consensus to remind the Chief Minister, who had released a separate manifesto for the development of Mysore ahead of the Assembly elections. The first and foremost promise made in the manifesto was ‘making Mysore a greater body’.

Convener of ACICM M Lakshmana promulgated seven points that raises the spectre for greater MCC. Following the improvement in transportation facility, especially Mysore-Bangalore broad gauge line, investors will definitely look towards Mysore to explore the possibilities. The existing Mysore-Bangalore road is also in for a makeover with an increase in the lanes.

The Mysore Airport at Mandakalli is already developed and the footfall of tourists is on the rise with every passing year. That apart, in the MCC limits alone various development works are being undertaken under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM).

Most importantly, around 41 villages are expected to be merged with the city corporation, a reason suffice to declare greater MCC. Those localities on the contour of the city lack basic amenities.

Lakshmana, who made a power-point presentation, said, it is high time a decision is taken in this regard as the population has already touched 10 lakh, against 9 lakh population according to the census of 2001. As is the proposal, the population is set to increase by another 1.80 lakh with the inclusion of 41 villages under MCC limits. It is also expected to augment the revenue of the local body, he said.
