Of hairpin bends and sharp curves

Agumbe ghats is popular for many breathtaking hairpin and horseshoe road curves. It has one of the best scenic routes and is also a trekkers’ paradise.

The ghat road is around 11 kilometres in length having roughly 16 hairpin bends and the elevation of Agumbe is 830 metres above sea level.

This hill station is a picturesque little hamlet nestled on a plateau at the top of the Agumbe ghats or Someshwara ghats.

Natural scenic beauty, verdant valleys and streams and mystic mountain terrains have made Agumbe a very famous location. This trekker’s paradise has a number of trekking trails towards many beautiful waterfalls.

Only a few popular waterfalls are accessible from the ghat road.  Being one of the highest peaks of Western Ghats, Agumbe offers glorious sunset view ,located on the 14th hairpin bend on the serpentine road. On a clear day, one can see the sun setting in the Arabian sea which is almost 50 kilometres west. Sunset Point, a gallery erected to view the sunset, offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

 An area near Agumbe has been converted into a protected area for medicinal plants to help in their conservation. It is also the home of the Agumbe Rainforest Research Station, the only permanent rainforest research station in India.

It is also equipped with India’s first automatic weather station. The station exclusively monitors changes in rain forests. This biodiversity hotspot, is the habitat of the largest venomous snake in the world, the King Cobra.
