Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas M Veerappa Moily on Saturday said gas agencies will have to issue LPG cylinders to its customers irrespective of whether they have an Aadhaar number or not.

“For everyone’s convenience, Aadhaar was made mandatory. However, following the recent order of the Supreme Court, this requirement has been changed.

Thus, customers need not necessarily have Aadhaar to avail themselves of an LPG connection,” Moily told reporters on the sidelines of the ‘National Seminar on Inclusive Growth and Sustainability Role of Commerce Education in India’ here. Over 14 crore people in the country have LPG connections. However, three crore among them have got connections by producing fake documents, he said

Highlighting the positives of having an Aadhaar number, Moily said that people with the Aadhaar will get more subsidies. “There are a lot of developments happening in the field of energy and, by 2013 India will attain self-sufficiency in the field of energy,” the minister said.

Moily said steps have been taken to control the import of fuel. Import of fuel will come down by 50 per cent by 2020 and 75 per cent by 2025.
