Noted Bollywood producer Ramesh Sippy on Thursday raised a copyright issue in the Supreme Court, while seeking a stay on the release of the 3D version of “Sholay”, the 1975 blockbuster movie made by his nephew Sasha.

A bench comprising Chief Justice P Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi decided to hear his petition on Friday, as senior advocate Shyam Divan sought an urgent hearing as the movie was set to be released on that day.

Sippy approached the apex court challenging the Bombay High Court’s order that refused to stay the release of the film. Ramesh Sippy, who had directed the original movie “Sholay”, is in dispute with his nephew Sasha over the rights of the film which was released in 1975.

Sasha, who is the son of Ramesh Sippy’s brother Vijay Sippy, had made the 3D version of the movie, is expected to be distributed by Jayantilal Gada.
