With the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) officials expressing inability to set up electricity sub stations in the Mangalore city limits and towns due to unavailability of land, District-in-Charge Secretary Bharat Lal Meena suggested the department to set up gas based power stations to address the problem.

He was chairing a meeting to review the progress of developmental works of Dakshina Kannada district at Zilla Panchayat hall on Monday. When the Mescom official said that though Mescom has prepared a proposal to establish sub station in Ullal and there is requirement of additional sub station in Mangalore city, finding sites for the purpose has become an obstacle, he said.

In response, the District-in-Charge Secretary suggested the officials not to follow the traditional method of setting up stations, but customise it according to the requirment. Gas based power stations have been set up in Bangalore and also customised stations are set up in the available area in the basement of apartments. Same model could be followed in Mangalore too, he said. The Mescom official said that the department has plans to develop two sub stations in apartments in Pandeshwar and Kulshekhar.

Areca compensation

Providing details about the compensation distributed to farmers who have incurred loss due to areca fruit rot disease, Horticulture Department deputy director said that the government has released Rs 20 crore compensation amount which has been fully distributed. There is a need for an additional Rs 10.41 crore for compensating all the deserving beneficiaries and a proposal on the same has been submitted to the government, but the fund has not been sanctioned yet. Bharat Lal Meena assured of taking steps to release the money.

When the Food and Civil Supplies Department Deputy Director Sharanabasappa said that there were more number of applicants for ration card for availing other benefits like medical, than using the card for ration purpose, the Secretary directed the department to distribute cards to only those who apply for the purpose of purchasing essential commodities from fair price shops.

He also directed the Mangalore City Corporation officials to start the work on the proposed city bus stand at Pumpwell, without waiting for acquiring additional land. As Rs one crore has been already sanctioned for the purpose, the foundation work should be started in the available land. Additional land acquisition and expansion plans can be made in the next phase, he suggested.

On the proposed railway overbridges and underbridges in some of the level crossings in Mangalore, MCC Superintendent Engineer Kanta Raju said that the proposals were okayed in a meeting of the MCC officials organised by the Palghat division at Southern Railway Headquarter, Chennai on November 29, and the proposal of constructing RUB at Bajal has been referred to Railway Safety Commission.
