A Facebook friendship allegedly claimed a life in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, about 450 km from here.

According to reports, an eighth-standard student allegedly shot dead another student of the same school following an altercation over Facebook comments exchanged by the latter with the former's “girlfriend”.

The police on Sunday arrested the accused, while two friends who had allegedly helped him commit the crime are said to be absconding.

According to the police, Naresh (name changed) had befriended a girl on the social networking site and was in touch with her.

Later Mayank, a standard XI student at the same school as Naresh, befriended the same girl over Facebook.
This irked Naresh, and he asked Mayank to keep away from his “girlfriend”. A few days ago, Naresh and his friends had allegedly threatened Mayank too.
Mayank, however, ignored the threat and continued to interact with the girl on the social networking site, not knowing that it would prove fatal for him.

On Saturday evening, Mayank was reportedly intercepted by Naresh and his two friends while he was going for his tuitions in Shamli, and they had an altercation. A little later Mayank's friends also reached the spot.
According to the police, Naresh, during the altercation, took out a country-made pistol and shot Mayank in the chest. He died on the spot.

The police managed to zero in on Naresh and his friends  with the help of the call details on Mayank's cellphone and comments on the social networking site. Naresh was arrested on Sunday. The police were looking for the other two accused.

According to the police, Naresh has admitted that he killed Mayank because the latter had continued his friendship with his “girlfriend” over Facebook.
