The two-wheeler metro bike ambulances may soon be a reality in Bangalore if things go as per plan.

The heavy traffic situations in the City are what have prompted the government to develop the “metro bike ambulance.” The pilot of the ambulance has been readied and the department is contemplating introducing the ambulance soon.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, M Madan Gopal, Principal Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, said: “We cannot quite say that we have finalised the model and will launch it; but if we can get past certain constraints, Bangalore will definitely have these two-wheeler ambulances. The idea is still in its primitive stage.”

He also said that this service would be supplementary to the ‘108’ ambulance services and will be equipped with a first-aid kit and medical equipment to stabilise the patient. In the given model, three people can be seated comfortably - one drives, while the other holds the patient.

However, the department is yet to work out the modality and structure of the bike and conduct experiments to establish the effectiveness of the bike.

“If launched, it will be a first of its kind in the country. We are yet to reach a conclusion on the funds and other details. There is a huge financial requirement that needs to be met for this project to be fulfilled. We also need trained personnel who can manage the situation in a prompt manner,” Gopal added.
