Nitish calls Rahul gesture 'eyewash'

Last Updated 28 January 2014, 20:29 IST

The bonhomie between the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and the Congress went for a toss on Tuesday, with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar lambasting Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

His angst over the failure of not being able to strike a poll pact with the Congress was quite palpable when he said: “The day Rahul Gandhi tore a piece of paper showing his disapproval over ordinance (which was meant to protect convicted leaders), we took him seriously. Only recently we came to know that it was merely an eyewash.”

Kumar’s barb at Rahul stemmed from the fact that the Congress has almost finalised an alliance with Lalu Prasad, convicted in the fodder scam, and Lok Janshakti Party’s  Ram Vilas Paswan, for the Lok Sabha elections.

“Lalu has been a natural ally of the Congress since 2000 Assembly polls. Anyway, those who have joined hands are facing corruption charges and will have to do lot of explaining during the general elections,” Nitish added.
