Road works move at a snail's pace, people suffer

Last Updated 07 February 2014, 17:06 IST

The work on development of roads, in the town is moving in a snail’s pace, causing inconvenience to the people. Even though Rs five crore was released for concreting Club Road, the work is not complete. The road  that provides connectivity to the town from Madikeri road has been closed to facilitate the work. As a result, the public and the vehicle users have been put to hardship.

The work on concreting of Club Road had commenced one month ago. The work on drains, footpath and laying of water pipeline had commenced from Agriculture department office to the government bus shelter. However, the work has not been completed.

A contractor from a neighbouring district has bagged the tender for the work. Labourers from Tamil Nadu have camped in the town to lay the concrete roads. However, they had been to their native places for Sankranthi festival, for more than a week. Now, again, there is no progress on the work, since a week.

Before completing the work on Club Road, the contractor has dug bypass road adjacent to Madikeri road, causing inconvenience to the vehicle users. Hundreds of vehicles arrive Somwarpet on Monday to take part in shandy. All the vehicles coming from Madikeri, Kushalnagar and Shanthalli have to depend on a road situated in front of taluk panchayat. The one way road has been causing inconvenience. Traffic congestion is a common feature here.

When the works began, people were happy that finally there was some development. But, now they wish no development was planned for their town, because of the inconvenience. Even shop keepers on these two stretches have been affected.
