Govt plans honey parks

The Agriculture department has planned to set up a number of ‘Honey Development Centers’ or ‘Honey Parks’ by next year in order to increase the production of honey. 

Vasantha Kumar, Special Secretary, Agriculture department, and CEO, Karnataka Agribusiness Development Corporation, said on Monday that the work on the proposed centres will begin at four-five locations, in association with University of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Horticulture, Bangalore University and a few NGOs. A majority of these centres will be set up in Kodagu and Chikmagalur districts. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of  “International Workshop on Technology Transfer in Beekeeping, Meliponiculture” and Honey festival. 

Bangalore University vice-chancellor Prof Thimmegowda said that the varsity will introduce a diploma course in apiculture under Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) this year.
