Volvo Buses, on Thursday, rejected the findings of Andhra Pradesh Crime Investigation Department that faulty design was one of the major causes for the fire, which engulfed a luxury bus and claimed 45 lives on October 30, 2013, in Mahabubnagar district. The reason for the accident was not due to a faulty design, a company statement said.

The technical data about Volvo’s full compliance with all stipulated regulations has been submitted to Andhra Pradesh CID. The products were fully approved under relevant regulations in India and, Volvo buses not only meet, but, in some cases, exceed them, it added.

The investigation carried out by the Volvo expert team pointed out the severity of the accident. It said that the bus experienced an immense 5 Megajoule, front-corner impact collision with a concrete barrier leading to several structural damages.

The statement added that Volvo products were developed to minimise consequences of accidents and the way forward to enhance transport safety lay in collaboration between relevant stakeholders and continuous improvement across many areas – road design, driver behaviour, bus operations, regulations, policies and the bus itself.
