Poll code blues on Day 1

Elected representatives felt the heat of model code of conduct with the Election Commission announcing the calendar of Lok Sabha polls on Wednesday.

Two programmes in which Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was scheduled to take part were cancelled in Bijapur and Bagalkot districts, while Rural Development and Panchayat Raj  (RDPR) minister H K Patil had to cut short his participation in a function to launch road works in Belgaum.

Siddaramaiah was scheduled to inaugurate a number of development marks and irrigation projects in Bijapur and Hungund on Wednesday.

The function was called off as soon as the general elections were announced and model code of conduct came into force. However, the chief minister addressed the Congress workers at the same venue.

Siddaramaiah was scheduled to inaugurate road works in Belgaum. He skipped the programme and RDPR minister H K Patil reached the venue late, by which time poll code had come into force. The minister did not address the gathering and handed over his official vehicle to the deputy commissioner.

Poll code violation

Meanwhile, in an alleged violation of the model code, cooperation minister Mahadeva Prasad launched the work on construction of a school building in Yalandur of Chamarajnagar. The programme was scheduled at 11 am.

The minister said that he was unaware of the exact time when the Election Commission announced the poll calendar and the election officers too “did not provide him any information.”

Tahsildar R Siddappa said that the programme was over by the time he reached the venue. But, the government vehicles were withdrawn and the elected representatives had to return in their private vehicles.

Deputy Commissioner A M Kunjappa said that he had brought the poll code violation to the notice of the organisers, but the inauguration was over. But the programme was not allowed to continue, he clarified.
