BJP lets Uma stay in Jhansi

Last Updated 28 March 2014, 20:03 IST

Dismissing speculation that Uma Bharti could be fielded against Sonia Gandhi from Raebareli, the BJP on Friday clarified that the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister would contest from her own constituency of Jhansi.

“As far as Uma Bharti is concerned, she will contest from Jhansi,” BJP spokesman Sudhanshu Trivedi told reporters here. Trivedi said the party would put up formidable candidates in Raebareli as well as Amethi, where Rahul Gandhi is contesting.

There was speculation that the party was considering fielding Bharti from Raebareli against Sonia. The speculation gathered momentum after Yoga guru Ramdev suggested it two days ago.

The clearing of the air by the party came after Bharti herself asserted that she would not leave Jhansi for Raebareli.
