Major commercial establishments and shopping malls across the City switched off their non-essential lights to observe Earth Hour between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm on Saturday.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organised by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to encourage individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet.

Crown Plaza Hotel in Electronics City lit thousands of candles to observe the hour. Over 500 persons attended the event where a large wax candle was also lit.

Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. had also displayed renewable products in a mobile van at the event. The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group too switched off their non-essential lights at the hotel.

The message of Earth Hour 2014 is to switch to renewable energy.

The movement which is in its sixth year, urges individuals to adopt household products powered by renewable energy and organisations to adopt renewable energy solutions to run their business operations. It also calls for the government to promote policies favourable to production of renewable energy.
