Officers of the static surveillance team on Tuesday seized Rs 71.6 lakh unaccounted-for money, allegedly being transported for election purposes.

They also seized a four-wheeler and took three men into custody. They have registered a case under Section 171 (H) of the Indian Penal Code against the trio.

The surveillance team was keeping a vigil for any violation of the model code of conduct and illegal transportation of money near Nalanda cinema on Mysore Road. They spotted a four-wheeler moving suspiciously and intercepted it.

On examination, they found a suitcase and a bag containing cash, and seized them.
Upon questioning, the trio – Chethan, Vinod and Thyagaraj – failed to provide satisfactory replies or valid documents for transporting such a huge amount of cash. The officers later obtained the court’s permission to interrogate the three men.
