Mirrors

Mirrors’ is a spooky horror thriller from well-known French director Alexandre Aja, and it has Kiefer Sutherland playing the main character Ben, a suspended NYPD detective, who is trying to make a living and reconcile with his estranged wife and kids.

But when he takes up a night job as security guard at a huge burnt-out departmental store, he starts seeing evil images in mirrors—the reflections from the other side of the world. Even as Ben tries to unravel what lies behind these mirrors, he is dragged into the midst of evil forces, involving a schizophrenic girl, which threaten not only his life but also his family.
The plot of ‘Mirrors’ is dry short, but embroiled in complexity. The script also lacks continuity and coherence. Like most horror movies ‘Mirrors’ also suffers from senseless sickness. In addition to this, the film offers no answers or is least interested in telling you in clear terms what was with the mirrors and so forth. The puzzles which Ben tries to solve are never actually answered.

Despite these flaws, the film is terribly good when it comes to the musical score. The music builds up an eerie feeling, and you are sure to end up with goose bumps every now and then. To supplement the excellent score are the visuals and the right camera angles by which the mirrors present a creepy feeling all around. They also make you search the screen for things that could possibly happen every second even when there are none. The reflective properties of mirror and water are exploited wisely by the director to the greatest possible extent.

The film’s poor, short plot is compensated by grotesque and graphic settings. It is loaded with violent and gory close-ups, substantiated by splendid special effects. Overall, no matter how bad the plot or the script a horror flick can be, what really matters is whether it gives you creepy feelings. On that front ‘Mirrors’ reflects a positive answer.
