Primary members may attend meet to choose city office-bearers

The Delhi Congress is set to get a revamp as the primary members of the party are likely to be called for a meeting to choose members for the vacant party posts.

A senior Congress leaders said the initiative of party vice president Rahul Gandhi of giving the power of selection of the leader to the primary members of the party, is likely to be considered in setting up of the Delhi unit.

“The city unit has already seen serious infighting and factionalism, which is still on. The high command wants us to concentrate on a democratic way of setting up a strong unit,” a senior party leader said.

Concerned over reports of factionalism between the Dikshit lobby and others, the party is likely to take action against those who have been playing spoilsport during various party events.

Congress party’s internal reports say some leaders, including former cabinet ministers and MLAs, were batting only for former chief minister Sheila Dikshit’s son and party candidate from East Delhi parliamentary constituency Sandeep Dikshit, defying the party’s order to help the MPs of their areas in the parliamentary elections.

Disciplinary committee

“Following the orders of the high command, we set up a disciplinary committee to look into the activities of all the key leaders, including MLAs, former cabinet ministers and former MLAs. The committee prepared the report and it will be forwarded to the high command soon,” the leader said.

During Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Delhi before the parliamentary elections, the committee conducted video recording of the buses being bought to the venue by various leaders to know about their capability of crowd pulling.

“Though no one can take the place of Sheila Dikshit, we will soon elect someone as the face of the party for the possible assembly elections,” he added.
