A nine-year-old girl was allegedly molested by the security guard of the government school in south Delhi’s Safdarjung.

The accused was arrested after the victim’s parents approached police.

The alleged incident took place on Saturday afternoon when the girl was returning home from school. The girl was one of the last to leave the school and the 55-year-old security guard held her back, saying he wanted to speak to her about something.

After everyone left, the guard picked up the girl and put her in his lap while speaking to her.

“The girl did not object to it as she would see him every day and found it nothing unusual. But the man began fondling her, which made her feel uncomfortable,” a police officer associated with the probe said.

The victim soon began crying, opposing to his advances. “The security guard got scared of her screams and allowed her to go home. She returned home but was unusually silent the entire day,” the officer said.

After her parents kept insisting with her to speak up, the girl broke down and narrated the incident to them. Since the school remained shut during the weekend, her parents approached the school authorities on Monday and complained about the incident.

They also decided to lodge a complaint with Safdarjung Enclave police station, under whose jurisdiction the government school falls. Based on the victim’s complaint, police booked the security guard under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He was arrested later the same day.

“Though the child has not mentioned about the accused committing a similar act with her in the past, we are trying to find out if he had made any other student his victim,” the officer said.

Police declined to divulge the identity of the accused, saying it would be easy to identify the victim. For similar reasons, the name of the school was not revealed. The accused had been working in the school for the past five years.
