People living at Kudru in Hejamadi Gram Panchayat Limits are still leading a life of ancient India. The region is aligned with Shambavi river on one side and this cuts them off from Mulky and other parts. The residents of the regions like Chennaiah Kudru, Parapatta, Kokrani and other parts of Kudru still depend on traditional boats to travel and reach places.
The region has majority of Christian families and Billava families dwelling here. The only demand of the people of the region has been for a connectivity. Tapping the potential of the problems persisting here, the politicians have rightly made use of the situation by making empty promises. The local residents complain that the politicians have neglected the region completely by not providing even basic facilities.
Mulky in Dakshina Kannada district is the nearest town to this region but Kudru comes under Udupi district. There are over 50 families dwelling here and these families have to take a long route to come out of the island for even small works. There are three Kudrus in the region, which are not linked to one another. Hence, the residents depend on boats to reach out the other Kudru, for schools, hospitals etc. In case of emergency, ambulance come next but boat is the saviour here.
There have been instances of boat mishaps too. During rainy season, people often prefer to stay indoor. School students are the ones who suffer the most. The problems are worsened by floods during rainy season.
“We have been living with so many problems. We do not understand where do we go to talk about our problems. Forget bridge, we will be happy if the authorities provide us with a wooden hanging bridge. Is that too much to ask for,” questions a resident who informed politicians had always approached them with the promise of providing bridge. People here have learnt to live with their problems. That is quite evident with the fact that every house has a boat and every child in the island is trained to row the boat. Children are also taught to swim. In case somebody wants to come to the island, they shout out loud standing on the bank. Some one or the other will make it a point to come to the bank and pick them up. The residents say that the MLAs have never visited the region so far.
