It’s time for students to enter a new phase of life as placements in most fields are over.

While students from some streams had good placements, others haven’t been very lucky and are on the hunt for a job.

Neha, an engineering student, says that the placements have been very good this year and yet, there have been students who are waiting for a job as the economic slowdown has affected the job scenario.

We were looking at 100 percent placements this year but we have had many students who have not been placed yet. The situation has improved to a great extent but the slowdown has affected all of us,” she says.

Leena Guruprasad, who teaches MBA students, says that the placement in some sectors has been great while some sectors are suffering due to the economic slowdown."

“Finance is one sector which is booming and doing really well. Most companies are hiring people from the finance sector as the demand is high. However, sectors such as marketing and HR is not doing that well due to several reasons. We have to come to terms with the fact that the economic slowdown has affected the market in the country. But overall the placements in some sectors have improved and some are yet to recover,” she details.

Engineering students inform that the placements have definitely improved from last year but not many core companies are attending the placement sessions as they don’t have much to offer.

Rohit, a student of mechanical engineering, says that the fact that more number of companies coming for placements have certainly bought a lot of cheer to the students but some who want to concentrate on core companies have been left disappointed.

“We could see that many new companies had come and wanted to hire more people.

The figures have definitely improved from last year but when it came to core companies, things were not very rosy. Very few of them had come for the placements.

However, things have definitely improved from last year and most people in my college have been placed. I know many seniors from last year who are yet to find a job and thankfully, we did not have to face that this year,” he says.

Degree students say that placements have been fair this year and many of them have been able to bag a job by the end of the placement season.

Many big companies, which were not recruiting last year, came back this year with a bigger budget and hired quite a few of them.

“Some companies, which had attended the campus recruitment sessions two years back and stopped recruiting ever since, came back this year. It was a good year for many of us as we were able to get a job. Most commerce and BBM students sat for these recruitment sessions. Many of us were able to crack these and get through to global companies. The placements have picked up this year,” says Abhinav, a final-year BCom student.
