The CPM is ideologically positioning itself for its post-poll role as a mediator between the Congress and the Third Front.

The party has posted two articles of general secretary Prakash Karat on its website in the last two days to articulate its stance that BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi should be prevented from coming to power.

The change of focus has obviously led to abandonment of the pre-poll stance of maintaining equidistance from the Congress and the BJP.

The article posted on Wednesday has been written for the forthcoming issue of party’s mouthpiece ‘People’s Democracy’. Another article on its website is for party’s theoretical magazine ‘The Marxist’.

“Whatever the outcome of the election, there is no doubt that Hindutva is witnessing a second coming, and that there is a shift among the big bourgeoisie in favour of the right-wing communal party, the BJP,” Karat writes. “It has become clear that the Congress and the UPA are losing ground steadily. In such a situation, the electoral battle to defeat the BJP and to implement suitable tactics after the election to prevent the BJP from coming to power, are of crucial importance.”
