In a tragic incident, a youth, who worked as a labourer, allegedly froze to death inside a meat plant in Unnao district.

Reports said the body of 18-year-old Zakir Ali, was recovered from the freezer at the meat plant in Banthar industrial area on Wednesday. He was rushed to a hospital in Kanpur but was declared brought dead.

Zakir, a resident of neighbouring Sitapur district, was working at the plant for the past 11 months. He had entered the plant on Tuesday night to put packed meat in the freezer room. However, he was trapped inside the freezer room after its doors got closed, police sources said.

Zakir’s friends launched a search for him when he did not return after several hours. Other labourers then broke open the doors of the freezer room and recovered his body. The factory officials allegedly fled from the hospital, after Zakir was declared dead, leaving his body there.

The fellow labourers created a ruckus and held a demonstration in front of the factory and refused to bury the body demanding compensation.

Hundreds of angry labourers surrounded the factory premises shouting slogans against the management.

The matter was resolved after several hours when the management agreed to pay a compensation of Rs 5.5 lakh to Zakir’s family, reports said.

Sources said a probe will also be conducted to ascertain if the factory had safety measures in place.
