ITBP inspector crushed to death

A 55-year-old Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel was crushed to death by a speeding truck at north Delhi’s Kashmere Gate on Monday morning.

The truck driver was chased and nabbed by a team of local police patrolling the area.
The victim has been identified as Inspector Kuldeep Chand Sharma who hailed from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district.

He was posted with ITBP headquarters at CGO Complex on Lodi Road. Police said he was returning from his hometown to join duty on Monday.

“Kuldeep was hit by the truck when he was crossing a road near gate number three of Kashmere Gate Metro station around 5 am,” said a police officer.

The truck driver did not stop after the accident and allegedly dragged Kuldeep under the vehicle for a short distance.

The incident was also witnessed by Head Constable Vishambher Singh and Constable Mukesh Kumar of Kashmere Gate police station, who were patrolling the area on a motorcycle.

“The two police officers saw the truck driver fleeing and chased the vehicle,” the officer added.

The truck was caught near Kashmere Gate ISBT and the accused overpowered. He was identified as 40-year-old Naresh Kumar, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district. “Kuldeep was declared brought dead on the spot and his body was taken to Sabzi Mandi mortuary for a post-mortem,” the officer said.

A case of rash driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Indian Penal Code has been registered with Kashmere Gate police station. Police have informed his family.

Kuldeep, who joined ITBP in 1983, worked as a subedar major and was a Hindi translator. He is survived by his wife and two children.
