Mayor B S Satyanarayana on Monday, directed Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials to take immediate steps to recover all major stormwater drain (SWDs) areas that have been encroached upon.
He ordered the Palike to take action regarding clearing the major SWDs following a complaint by Jayanagar MLA, B N Vijay Kumar, at a meeting held at the BBMP head office.
Vijay Kumar rued that despite several meetings, no action had been taken to clear the encroachments on SWDs.
Survey conducted
Deputy Commissioner (Bangalore Urban), G C Prakash said a survey has already been conducted to determine the extent of encroachments.
“Apart from clearing the encroachments, the major SWDs should be fenced,” the mayor said.
“The survey has been conducted by the survey, revenue and engineering department officials. We have survey report of 934 lakes and 99 villages. I request the details of encroachment be made available on BBMP website,” he said.
Palike Commissioner M Lakshminarayana directed chief engineer (lakes) to obtain the report from the deputy commissioner’s office and upload it on the official website of the Palike.
Chief engineer (SWD) said that the work on 32 major SWDs would begin from next week.
