A 30-year-old driver has been arrested for strangling his employer’s mother in February for refusing a loan of Rs 20,000 for constructing a house, police said on Saturday.

A probe was taken up after 63-year-old Mohini Gupta was found dead in her house in Shivpuri on February 17.

“Strangulation marks were found around Mohini’s neck and the house was found ransacked,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Mandeep Singh Randhawa said. A case of murder and robbery was filed with Jagatpuri police station.

During investigation, a police team questioned and interrogated several people, including employees, neighbours, labourers and bad characters who names were registered with local police. After the initial probe, the team zeroed in on the driver of Mohini’s son, Ajay Kumar, who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district.

Ajay was detained and questioned. He told police that he was in need of money as his house was being constructed and he had asked Mohini for a loan of Rs 20,000.

“Mohini had refused to give the money to Ajay. On the day of the incident, Mohini was alone in the house. Ajay strangled her and stole jewellery and cash from the house,” Randhawa added. He ransacked every cupboard in the house. Mohini was declared dead on the spot.

“Ajay was not among the initial suspects as Mohini’s son used to stay in a separate house in the neighbourhood,” another police officer said. The needle of suspicion pointed towards Ajay’s involvement after Mohini’s son told police that he visited the house frequently.
