Tipsy motorcyclist injures traffic cop

A traffic police constable on duty was injured after a tipsy two-wheeler rider rammed him on Saturday night in Kamakshipalya traffic police limits. 

Police have identified the constable as Thammaiah and the two-wheeler rider as Ramesh, a resident of Annapurneshwari Layout in Nagarabhavi and a private firm employee. Both were shifted to a hospital for treatment. 

According to police, the incident occurred at 9.30 pm when an inebriated Ramesh lost balance and hit the constable before falling down from the bike. Thammaiah sustained injuries on his right leg and forehead.

Thammaiah was on duty as part of a special drive against drunk driving. He flagged down Ramesh for an alcometer test. However, Ramesh started riding the bike  in a zigzag manner and hit the constable, police said.

The alcometer test result indicated that Ramesh was under the influence of alcohol.The police have booked Ramesh IPC Sections 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt) and would arrest once he is discharged from the hospital, the police added.

Drunk driving cases

The City traffic police conducted a special drive against drunk driving between 9 pm Saturday and 2 am Sunday. 

The police checked as many as 10,639 vehicles at 109 places. As many as 18 trucks, 29 autorickshaws, 93 cars, 625 two wheelers, 12 cabs, 15 goods vehicles and one bus were checked. 

Drivers of 793 vehicles were found to be drunk. Four drivers in R T Nagar, Peenya, Chamarajpet and Rajajinagar were found to be heavily inebriated as the breath analyser test result indicated that they had 550 mgd alcohol in their blood. The police will write to the Regional Transport Authorities, recommending suspension of the driving licenses of these drivers.
