This is the first session to be held after the ruling party went through the internecine fight.

The session is being held even as 25 seats of the Legislative Council are going to the polls on December 18. As many members of the twin houses are busy campaigning for the elections, the business advisory committees of both the houses are expected to meet on Monday morning and decide to adjourn the proceedings of the session till December 22, after making obituary reference.

Issues

If the session is postponed the Houses will meet only for seven days altogether. The Opposition parties are making all efforts to make better use of the available time to corner the ruling party on many issues, especially alleged illegal mining in Bellary.

The Andhra Pradesh government recommended a CBI inquiry into the issue. The Congress and the JD(S) have demanded that the State government also take up similar action. But, Chief Minister Yeddyurappa had denied the allegations. The CM, on Sunday, said he would react to the allegations when the Opposition parties raise the issue in the session.

The JD(S) has decided to raise issues of lathi charge on farmers in different places and dip in revenue collection in the State. Congress leader V R Sudarshan said the party would raise the issue of flood relief works in North Karnataka.

He alleged that the ruling party was busy handling the internal crisis when the State was witnessing the worst calamity. Many flood victims had not yet received relief, he said.

On the other hand, the CM’s staff is also busy collecting the records related to natural calamities the State witnessed in the last two-three decades and how the then ruling governments responded to the situation.

The controversy over the Centre’s decision to set up Mahadayi water dispute tribunal is expected to come up in the session. On this issue, the BJP may corner the principal opposition party - the Congress.
