A teenage girl and her nine-year-old relative died after a container truck collided with their motorcycle near Ganesha temple close to the K R Puram bus stand on Tuesday. The girl’s brother, who was riding the bike, was injured and is said to be out of danger.

Shabrin Taj, 18, and her relative Qutub, 9, were declared brought dead at a hospital shortly after they met with an accident while returning to the City from Kolar. Taj’s brother, Ansar Khan, was riding the bike and the deceased were on the pillion when the truck, coming at rapid speed, struck the two-wheeler just as it left a circle after the signal turned signal, the police said.

Just as Khan started his bike after the signal opened, the driver lost control and the truck hit the two-wheeler. All the three riders were flung into the air, the police added. They were taken to a hospital where Taj and Qutub were declared brought dead. But the truck driver did not stop and sped off though the thoroughfare is one of the busiest in the City.

The accident triggered a flash protest by local residents who blocked the road and demanded stern action against the driver, and measures to avert such accidents which have gone up in the last few months. The protest brought traffic to a standstill for a while, the police said. The protesters relented only when the police promised to arrest the driver soon and deploy more personnel at the traffic junction.

Taj was preparing to join a degree college in the City after passing the PUC. They were proceeding to Qutub’s house near Tin Factory.
